10 Big Renovating Mistakes

Are you looking around your home and thinking it’s too outdated or just plain ugly? Then it might be time for your home to undergo a renovation. Though some renovations are fairly simple, there is a lot of room for mistakes.

There are a bunch of things to keep in mind when preparing for a renovation. Make sure you don’t make some of these mistakes while giving your home the updated look it needs!

Buying Cheap Materials

While saving money on renovations is great, make sure the materials aren’t too cheap. Keep in mind that you are getting what you pay for. If you can’t afford to do it, it might be better to wait.

Wrong Measurements

Being off on measurements even the tiniest bit can make a huge difference. If your dimensions are off and not equal or symmetrical it won’t have the full impact you want. If you aren’t sure how to measure or don’t understand the directions, call someone and ask!

Too Trendy

The latest trends might look really cool now, but only for a short-period of time. More than likely, you are going to want something that stands the test of time.

It’s Too Dark

A huge project often overlooked in renovations is lighting. Lighting can completely change the colors, the feeling and the vibe in your home.

Skipping Prep Work

Now this rule sounds tedious and awful, but it will save you a ton of time later on. You need to take the time and do it right from the beginning. And if doing the prep work means saving time and money, isn’t it worth it?

Overbuilding for Neighborhood

If you have a $100,000 house and put a $100,000 addition on it, you now have a $200,000 house in a $100,000 neighborhood.

Forgetting About Safety

THIS ONE IS VERY IMPORTANT. Your safety is number one on a job site. Safety items include goggles for your eyes, ear protection, and gloves to protect your hands. A nice set of boots wouldn’t be a bad idea either as nails and sharp objects are everywhere.

Not Doing Your Homework

You need to know what you are getting yourself into. Even if you aren’t doing the work yourself, know what to look for and what your contractor is doing.

Avoiding Permits

If you do work without the proper permits and something serious happens, insurance will not cover it. So get the permits.

Unrealistic Budgets

Make sure your budget has some padding. You never know what you are going to find behind a wall. Usually the biggest cost in a renovation is labor, so don’t underestimate what the cost is going to be.
